Research blog: Music Video Conventions

 Hello World,

We did some research for our music video... here it is

Name of song: What Makes You Beautiful- by One Direction

CAMS: Uses many high angles with long shots (show an overview of the scene the ocean/beach), eye-level angles with a medium close up (some when a singular member's part came on it went into an eye-level angle to show just them), a few low angles (show them walking), used a few Dutch angles (one use when taking a pic with sparklers,

EDITING: Action match of when they were driving to the beach and when they were already at the beach. Fades out at the end to the beach. Fades into the beach. Many inserts such as when the clips of the girls they were supposedly singing about got inserted in.

SOUND: There was little ambient sound (at the end of the video the sounds of the ocean). All-diegetic sound (the song/the band sang it, but lip-synced it in the video)

MIS EN SCENE: T-shirts, 1 wearing short sleeve button up, wearing sneakers at the beach, uniform style life pants, natural lighting, the set is on a beach, props sparklers, van, sunglasses (the girls)

Name of song: Who Says- by Selena Gomez & The Scene

CAMS: The first scene is close up, zooms out, a long shot to show her dress and her taking off her shoes, many eye-level angles of when she is singing, Tracking shots (when she was in the taxi and it was moving), pan movement in the first scene showing about 160 degrees of her. Medium long shot when she is singing in the crowd of people at the beach.

EDITING: Fades into Selena Gomez's face, Jump shot when Selena goes from a studio-looking environment to jumping forward in time and going to her already outside, cutaway to inserts of pictures that relate to the music but take away the attention from the main action which is Selena Gomez. Fades out at the end of the video from sand and ocean water to black.

SOUND: No voiceovers but there is a jingle that plays every time Selena says a certain lyric, all of the sound in the Video is non-diegetic sound because the song was inserted, and she is just lip-syncing

MIS EN SCENE: Multiple scenes such as a studio, outside which seems like New York City, and the beach. High heels, a microphone, and a tissue. The lighting is more yellow for most of the video. She has multiple costumes such as a black dress, and a white top with light blue denim shorts.

Name of song: Heart Attack- by Demi Lovato

CAMS: Close-up introduction of Demi's face, and when she sings in the first few scenes, High angle in the next few scenes, low-angle long shots to show her body language and the background, medium long shot in the black room, zooming out and in when there is a long shot, God's eye view angles all throughout the video.

EDITING: Many cross-cutting scenes from the black room background to the white room background and to the hallway-looking background. Action matches in one of the scenes where she is in the white room rubbing her hands and it zooms in to emphasize her rubbing the black paint over her hands. Multiple inserts such as when she's in the hallway and it insert a clip of just her alone singing while the other shot had the whole band and her.

SOUND: No ambient sound just non-diegetic sound from prerecorded music that she is lip-syncing to.

MIS EN SCENE: She wears a white shirt covered in black paint, a black leather jacket with a black jumpsuit, and another black top, the lighting changes from scene to scene but has dark, blue accent lighting and bright white lighting. The settings are an abandoned hallway, a black room, and white room, she also has a band in the background of a few scenes and is covered in black paint in the other.

Until next time!!!!
